Facebook Ads Getting Clicks But No Sales? Here’s What’s Actually Going On.

You set the campaign up. People are clicking. The cost per click looks fine.

And then… nothing. No sales. No enquiries. Just a slowly-emptying ad budget and a growing suspicion that Facebook ads “just don’t work for your business.”

I get this DM at least twice a week. So let me save you the £400 you’re about to spend trying to fix the wrong thing.

If you’re getting clicks but no conversions, it’s almost always one of four problems. Here’s how to work out which one.

## Problem 1: You’re getting the wrong clicks

The clicks look healthy on the dashboard. But who’s actually clicking?

Meta’s algorithm optimises for whatever you tell it to. If your campaign objective is “traffic,” Meta will find you people who LOVE clicking on things… and not necessarily people who love buying things. These are two very different audiences.

**How to spot it:** Your traffic is high but the time-on-page is under 10 seconds. Your bounce rate is 80%+. You’re getting clicks from countries or age groups you don’t sell to.

**What to do:** If you’re set up for sales, your campaign objective should be “Sales” (or “Conversions” depending on which version of Meta’s interface you’re in), not “Traffic.” Yes, you’ll get fewer clicks. They’ll be from people more likely to actually buy.

## Problem 2: Your landing page is doing the killing

The ad is doing its job. It’s getting the right person to click. And then they land on your page and… leave within 8 seconds.

**How to spot it:** Decent click-through rate (1%+), but conversion rate on the landing page is under 1%.

**What to do:** Open your landing page on your phone. (Not your laptop. Your phone. That’s where 85% of your traffic actually is.)

Read the first sentence. Does it match the promise the ad made? Or did your ad say “Save 3 hours a week” and your landing page lead with “Welcome to our company”?

The single biggest landing page killer for small businesses is a mismatch between what the ad promised and what the page delivers in the first screen.

## Problem 3: Your offer is the problem

This one is harder to hear, so I’ll say it gently.

Sometimes the ads aren’t broken. The offer is.

If your service costs £2,000 and you’re trying to convert cold traffic in a single click, that’s a really hard ask. Cold buyers don’t make £2,000 decisions from an ad. They make £20 decisions from an ad. The £2,000 decision comes after they’ve heard from you several times.

**How to spot it:** Add-to-carts or initial form fills are good. Final purchases are not. Or your offer is high-ticket and you’re expecting one-click conversions from people who’d never heard of you yesterday.

**What to do:** Don’t sell the £2,000 thing in the ad. Sell the £20 thing, or the free thing, or the email list signup. Build the relationship first. Then sell the big offer to people who already know you.

## Problem 4: The tracking is lying to you

This is the most boring problem and the most common one people miss.

If your pixel isn’t set up properly, or if you’re not using the Conversions API (CAPI), Meta literally doesn’t know when sales happen. So it can’t optimise for them. And the dashboard might be showing fewer conversions than you actually got.

**How to spot it:** You’re getting actual sales (your Shopify dashboard or PayPal is telling you so) but Meta is showing zero or very few conversions.

**What to do:** Get your pixel checked. If you’re on Shopify, set up CAPI. If you’re not technical, this is a 30-minute job for someone who is. It’s not glamorous but it’s usually the highest-impact fix you can make.

## How to work out which one it is

Open your Meta dashboard and look at this in order:

1. **CTR (Click-Through Rate):** Under 1%? The ad isn’t compelling enough — go fix the creative, not the landing page.

2. **CPC (Cost Per Click):** Higher than expected for your industry? Probably an audience or creative issue.

3. **Landing page conversion rate:** Under 1%? The landing page is the problem.

4. **Time on page from ad traffic:** Under 20 seconds? Probably wrong-audience clicks.

5. **Meta conversions vs actual sales:** Big gap? Tracking issue.

You don’t need to fix all four. You usually need to fix one. The trick is working out which one.

## The bigger thing nobody says

Most “facebook ads aren’t working” conversations are actually one of these four things in disguise. The ads aren’t broken. There’s a specific bottleneck somewhere in the funnel.

Find the bottleneck. Fix that one thing. Don’t blow the whole campaign up and start again. That’s the small business owner equivalent of throwing your laptop out the window when it crashes.

If you’ve been staring at clicks-with-no-conversions for weeks and you can’t work out which of the four is your problem, that’s the kind of thing the newsletter is good for. Subject line “Help” usually does it.
